How the NHL standings 2026-27 are ranked

The NHL standings 2026-27 rank teams by points, not record. A win is two points and an overtime or shootout loss is one. Records read wins, losses and overtime losses, so 30-15-5 is 65 points.

The division table decides the top three automatic places. The conference table decides the wild cards. P% is points earned divided by points available, and it shows who is ahead when games played differ.

NHL playoff format and the wild card line

The top three in each division qualify. The two best remaining teams in each conference by points are the wild cards. That means a fourth-placed team can take a wild card with more points than a third-placed team in the other division.

The first two rounds stay inside the division. Each division winner faces a wild card, second plays third, and the higher seed hosts games 1, 2, 5 and 7. The NHL playoff picture page has the live field and bracket.

NHL tiebreakers in brief

Teams level on points are split by fewer games played first. Then come regulation wins, regulation plus overtime wins, total wins, points in head-to-head games, goal differential and goals for. Every current tie and how it breaks is on the NHL tiebreakers page.
