How the standings work
Every league ranks teams a little differently. The NFL and MLB use winning percentage, with games back showing the distance to the leader. The NBA also uses winning percentage but sends seeds 7 to 10 into a play-in tournament.
The NHL and CFL run on points: two for a win and one for an overtime or shootout loss in hockey, or one for a tie in Canadian football. The Premier League and MLS use three points for a win and one for a draw.
When teams are tied, each league has its own order. The NFL starts with head-to-head record, the NHL with regulation wins and the Premier League with goal difference. The NFL tables apply the full official order after every game.
The other leagues use a short version, and their full order is on each league's tiebreakers page.
Every league also has a tiebreakers page. It lists the official steps in plain English, shows the current ties and how they break today, and has a checker to compare any two teams.
Clinch tags appear once a team has secured something:

Standings Today FAQ
How often are the standings updated?
Standings refresh automatically after every game, usually within minutes of the final score. There is no manual update, so the tables are always current. The time of the last update is shown under every table.
Which leagues does Standings Today cover?
Seven leagues, all live. They are the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, CFL, MLS and the Premier League. Each one has division, conference or full-table views, a playoff picture, a tiebreakers page and a page for every team.
The Premier League has a European race and a relegation battle in place of a playoff picture.
Do the standings include tiebreakers?
Yes for the NFL, where the tables apply the full official tiebreaker order after every game. The other leagues use a short version of their order.
Every league’s tiebreakers page walks the full official steps, shows the current ties and how they break today, and lets you compare any two teams.
What do the letters next to team names mean?
They are clinch and elimination tags. An x means a clinched playoff berth, y a clinched wild card, z a clinched division and an asterisk the top seed with home advantage. In the NBA a p means a clinched play-in spot.
An e means the team is eliminated. The legend under each table spells them out.
What is a magic number?
The mix of a leader’s wins and a chaser’s losses that clinches a division or a playoff spot. In the NHL and CFL it counts points instead of wins.
It appears on division pages, playoff pictures and team pages once it is 30 or under, together with elimination numbers for the teams chasing.
Can I see past seasons?
Yes. Every league page has a season selector and archive pages for previous years, and every team page has a season-by-season history.
Where does the data come from?
Standings are built from official game results delivered through a live sports data feed and checked against each league’s published standings.
Bookmark the league you follow and check it after the late games. The tables will already be right by the morning.
The NFL standings change every Sunday night, and the playoff picture of whichever league is in its final weeks is the page to watch first.
