Standings are updated with the completion of each game. Teams are ranked by points, then points percentage, regulation wins and regulation plus overtime wins. Clinch tags use points-only maths and appear once a spot is mathematically settled.
How conference seeding works
This view shows how the playoff field would look if the season ended today. Teams are ranked by points; the top three in each division qualify, the two best remaining teams in the conference take the wild cards, and the dashed line marks the cutoff. The first two rounds are played inside the division.
NHL Conference standings FAQ
Who has the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference?
The season has not started; the Boston Bruins open the Eastern Conference order before the first games.
Who holds the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference?
The New Jersey Devils are the No. 8 seed at 0-0-0. The New York Islanders (0-0-0) are first outside the line.
Who has the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference?
The season has not started; the Anaheim Ducks open the Western Conference order before the first games.
Who holds the last playoff spot in the Western Conference?
The Minnesota Wild are the No. 8 seed at 0-0-0. The Nashville Predators (0-0-0) are first outside the line.
How many teams from each conference make the NHL playoffs?
8: the top 3 in each division plus 2 wild cards.
Why is a division winner seeded above a wild card with a better record?
The top three in each division are guaranteed spots; wild cards fill the rest by points, so a fourth-place team can miss out to a team with fewer points from the other division.
What does the dashed line mean?
It is the playoff cutoff after seed 8. Teams above it are in today; teams below are chasing, with games back measured against the No. 8 seed.
