How the MLS standings work

Clubs are ranked inside their conference by points per match (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), so teams with games in hand are not penalised; after 34 matches it equals total points. Ties are broken by total wins, then goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary points. Head-to-head is not used. Full order: MLS tiebreakers.
