How the NBA standings work
Teams are ranked by winning percentage over 82 games. There are no ties, so the order is wins and losses with the tiebreakers below settling identical records. Games back (GB) shows how far a team trails the leader; half a game means the teams have played a different number of games, which is common in the NBA because schedules are uneven from week to week.
The standings are read at two levels that matter and one that does not. The conference table decides every playoff and play-in seed. The division table decides the six division champions, which counts only as a tiebreaker. The league table ranks all 30 teams and is used for the draft lottery order, not the playoffs.
NBA playoff seeding and the play-in tournament
Each conference sends eight teams to the playoffs. Seeds 1 to 6 qualify directly by record. Seeds 7 to 10 enter the play-in tournament: the 7 and 8 seeds play once and the winner takes the No. 7 seed; the 9 and 10 seeds play once and the loser is out; the loser of 7 v 8 then hosts the winner of 9 v 10 for the No. 8 seed. Two dashed lines in the conference view mark these cutoffs: after seed 6 and after seed 10.
The higher seed has home-court advantage in every series, hosting games 1, 2, 5 and 7. Unlike the NFL, a division title does not guarantee a top seed; it is only a tiebreaker. This format has been in place since the 2020-21 season. The playoff picture page shows the seeds, the play-in matchups and the first-round bracket as they stand.
NBA tiebreakers in brief
When two teams finish with the same record the league applies a fixed order: head-to-head record, then whether one team won its division, division record (if both are in the same division), conference record, record against playoff-eligible teams in the conference, and finally net points. With three or more teams tied, the combined head-to-head record among them comes first. The tiebreakers page shows every current tie and how it breaks today.
How to read the columns
Records are wins-losses, ranked by winning percentage. GB is games behind the conference or division leader. DIV and CONF are the records against division and conference opponents, both used in tiebreakers. DIFF, points for minus points against, is the best early-season guide to how good a team really is, because point differential predicts future records better than the record itself over 82 games. The legend under each table defines every column and the x, p, z and * clinch tags.
When are NBA standings updated?
After the final buzzer of every game, including the late West Coast games, so the table is correct by the morning. The timestamp under the table shows the last update in your local time, and arrows next to a team mark movement since the last results. The regular season ends in mid April, followed by the play-in tournament and the playoffs.

How many teams make the NBA playoffs?
