How the MLB standings work
Baseball ranks teams by winning percentage, and over 162 games the gaps are measured in games back. GB is how far a team trails the division leader; a half game means the two teams have played a different number of games. A team half a game back can move ahead on a day off if the leader loses.
Within each division the leader is seeded first. The wild card race is a separate table: the three best records in each league that did not win a division, ranked by winning percentage, with games back measured to the third wild card spot rather than the division leader.
How the MLB playoff format works
Twelve teams qualify, six per league. The three division winners are seeded 1 to 3 by record, and the three best remaining teams are the wild cards, seeded 4 to 6. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds get a bye straight to the Division Series. The No. 3 seed, even though it won its division, plays in the best-of-three Wild Card Series: No. 3 hosts No. 6 and No. 4 hosts No. 5, with every game at the higher seed.
The winner of 4 v 5 meets the No. 1 seed and the winner of 3 v 6 meets the No. 2 seed in the Division Series (best of five). The League Championship Series and World Series are best of seven. The playoff picture page shows the seeds and the bracket as they stand today.
MLB tiebreakers in brief
Since 2022 there is no Game 163. When two teams finish level, head-to-head record decides first. If that is tied, the next steps are record inside the division, record against the rest of the league, and finally the record in the second half of league games, shrinking the window one game at a time until one team is ahead. With three or more teams tied, the combined head-to-head record ranks the group. The tiebreakers page shows every current tie and how it breaks today.
How to read the columns
W and L are wins and losses and PCT is winning percentage. GB is games behind the division leader. RS and RA are runs scored and allowed and DIFF is the run differential, a good guide to how strong a team really is. HOME and AWAY split the record by venue, DIV is the record against division rivals, STRK is the current streak, L10 the record over the last ten games, and NEXT the next opponent, with @ for road games. The legend under each table defines every column and the clinch tags: x playoff berth, y wild card, z division, * best record in the league.
When are MLB standings updated?
After the final out of every game, including the late West Coast games, so the table is correct by the morning. The timestamp under the table shows the last update in your local time, and arrows next to a team mark movement since the last results. The regular season ends in the last week of September and the Wild Card Series begins two days later.
