MLS Tiebreakers Explained

MLS ranks clubs by points per match (three for a win, one for a draw). When clubs are level the league looks at total wins first, then goal difference, goals scored, fewer disciplinary points and away goals. This page explains each step, shows which 2026 positions are tied today and how they break, and lets you compare any two clubs.

Current Ties in the 2026 Table

The Official Tiebreaker Order

  1. 1
    Points per match

Three for a win, one for a draw. MLS seeds by points per match so clubs with games in hand are not penalised; at season's end that is simply total points.

Example Two clubs on 52 points from 34 matches: next step.

  2. 2
    Total wins

    More wins ranks higher.

Example 15 wins beats 14, even with the same points.

  3. 3
    Goal difference

    Goals scored minus goals conceded.

    Example +18 beats +12.

  4. 4
    Goals scored

    Total goals for the season.

  5. 5
    Fewer disciplinary points

Yellow and red cards converted to points; the cleaner club ranks higher.

  6. 6
Away goals, away GD, home goals

Then away goal difference, away goals, home goal difference and home goals, in that order.

  7. 7
    Coin toss

Only if everything above is level.

Why the Tiebreakers Matter

Wins before goal difference

Unlike European leagues, MLS rewards winning first: a club with more wins ranks above one with a better goal difference.

Home advantage is at stake

Seeds decide who hosts Round One, the conference rounds and MLS Cup, so a tie at 1-2 or 7-8 changes the whole bracket.

Decision Day

All matches on the final day kick off at the same time, so ties are broken live.
